"I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning", Trump tweeted, adding that he would name a replacement next week.

"The idea raised September 1 during a Situation Room meeting with the president was vehemently opposed by national security adviser John Bolton, even as officials at the State Department argued it could move the parties closer to an agreement", NBC News reported.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he fired national security adviser John Bolton, citing strong disagreements on a number of policy issues.

He says Bolton submitted his resignation on Tuesday morning. "I thank John very much for his service", he wrote.

Trump's next national security adviser will be the fourth of his administration.

Inside the administration he advocated caution on the president's whirlwind rapprochement with North Korea and against Trump's decision previous year to pull US troops out of Syria.

Mr Bolton himself disputed Mr Trump's version of events, apparently saying that the president had not fired him in person, as he claimed.

The firing comes after reports emerged suggesting Mr Bolton was at odds with Mr Trump's plan to hold peace talks with the Taliban.

Mr. Bolton's ouster came as a surprise to many in the White House.

It is not clear whether the Camp David meeting factored in to Trump's decision to fire Bolton.
