United States bounces Varejao, Brazil; advances to quarterfinals

Basketball- FIBA World Cup- Second Round- Group K- United States v Brazil

Greece started the game with big motivation and managed to win the first period, 12-28.

The Milwaukee Bucks man, the NBA's most valuable player in 2018-19, picked up a fifth foul in the fourth quarter. "This is what we (are) playing for this team for, these type of games, these type of moments".

Longtime NBA forward Luis Scola is the only man on Argentina's roster who was part of its past Olympic and world success - the biggest being an Olympic gold in 2004, the only time the USA hasn't taken the title in the Dream Team era.

What will be interesting to watch is whether US coach Gregg Popovich plays Turner and Brook Lopez together, using Lopez's 3-point prowess as a weapon.

"I think guys are excited for it", Harrison Barnes said of the knockout round. "I've definitely gotten used to it". Against Brazil on Monday (8:30 a.m. ET), the USA shouldn't be too afraid of Anderson Varejao or Cristiano Felicio inside, though Felicio has grabbed 5.8 offensive rebounds per 30 minutes at the World Cup.

Team USA will face France in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

The U.S. next will play France in the quarters on Wednesday at 7 a.m. ET, and there will be real effect to that one. The Serbs lost to Spain in Sunday's group-stage finale, but Serbian coach Aleksandar Djordjevic likely still has plenty of confidence about a potential matchup with the United States.

Two of the seven teams that will officially qualify for the Olympics out of the World Cup are the top two finishers from the Americas. The teams' last meeting in 2010, a 70-68 US win, went down to the final second and a missed shot by Barbosa.

Brazil will go onto lose this one and with be shunted out of the running in to make it to the quarter-finals.

Even with a 52.2 percent shooting performance against Brazil, the U.S.is hitting 46 percent from the tournament and only 32.7 percent on 3-pointers.

The USA topped Group K as they chase a third World Cup title in a row in China.

At Nanjing, both Group L teams were already eliminated from reaching the quarterfinals. They'll first have to beat France on Wednesday, however.

In Monday's other key game, Australia beat France (4-1) 100-98.

The first two last-eight ties, which pit Argentina against Serbia and Spain against Poland, are scheduled for tomorrow.

After topping their first round group, the side entered the land of the second round with a momentous 69-53 win over Greece.

Back to the last day of the second round.

At Shenzhen, Greece needed to win by 12 to have a chance of advancing.
