Twitter users suggest celebrity replacements for Commons Speaker John Bercow

Bercow is a fervent supporter of equal rights and of diversifying the House of Commons

Bercow said he would not stand again if MPs vote later Monday in favor of an early general election - and if they do not, as seems likely, he would resign on October 31: the scheduled date for Brexit.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle (Brighton Kemptown) appeared to try to hold on to Speaker John Bercow at the point he was requested to lead MPs to the Lords, with doorkeepers intervening.

Rhondda Labour MP Chris Bryant has confirmed he will stand in the race to succeed John Bercow as Commons Speaker.

Before walking to the Lords, Mr Bercow said of the protest: "I recognise that our presence is desired by our Majesty the Queen's Commissioners". This is a pledge that I intend to keep'.

"If the House votes tonight for an early general election, my tenure as Speaker and MP will end when this parliament ends", he said.

His announcement was greeted with applause from all sides of the legislature, and a standing ovation from opposition benches.

Mr Bercow, who has been the Speaker since 2009 and MP for Buckingham since 1997, has attracted global attention as he presides over heated debates and motions relating to Brexit.

In recent months he has also come under fire for a series of controversial rulings which were widely considered to favour Remain supporters.

In the speech announcing his plan to resign, Bercow fixed his gaze on the benches where ministers sit and delivered a direct warning to the government: "We degrade this parliament at our peril".

While Mr Bercow moves on to a new challenge, Coral has also offered the latest odds on the next Commons Speaker, with a Labour replacement touted.

He has sought to modernize parliament, abandoning the speaker's traditional robes for a simple gown over a suit, and seeking to make it easier for female MPs with new babies.

Bercow said in response, "I don't care if you don't like it".

"Your commitment to your principles and to your constituents is unwavering and an example to others", Gove said.

Mr. Bercow, 56, is best known for presiding over debates, bellowing "Order!"

She had been previously suggested by some campaigners against a no-deal Brexit as head of an interim cross-party Government if Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced from power in the coming weeks.

Yesterday he announced he will finally stand down on October 31 - more than a year later than he promised he would.
