Tesla driver sleeps while apparently using autopilot on highway

Dakota Randall took a video Sunday that shows the driver’s head down

Tesla notes that according to their data driving with Autopilot on is safer than without, and noted that the videos of drivers happily sleeping behind the wheel is likely the result of pranksters playing a unsafe game of scaring fellow drivers, and overall likely damaging the EV cause.

According to a video taken by a driver, a man and a woman were fast asleep in a Tesla vehicle on Sunday as the self-driving vehicle navigated a MA highway.

Randall took cellphone video of the incident. Randall said he honked the horn but wasn't able to wake the snoozing driver.

The driver looked hunched over and the passenger also appeared to be dozing off. Randall posted the video to Twitter on Sunday.

A similar video filmed in August in Los Angeles, California, shows another resting driver travelling down the middle lane of a busy interstate highway. Another driver! As much as I enjoy the proof instead of a tall tale that can get more elastic with the retelling, this, too, is just not cool. "It was so odd".

State police say they're aware of the video.

"At highway speeds, drivers typically receive warnings every 30 seconds or less if their hands aren't detected on the wheel", a company spokesperson said. "Maybe the people in the auto were faking being asleep, but I'm skeptical".

It's one thing if that vehicle was piloting itself down a barren stretch of road, endangering only itself if Droopy Driver hit some pedals in his sleep or the auto itself makes a miscue, as has happened repeatedly, sometimes withfatal results.
