Telecom company to give free streaming box to internet-only subscribers

As cord cutting starts to put a real dent in the bottom lines of cable and satellite businesses, some are getting creative in their attempts to stem the tide.

Comcast says "Xfinity Flex comes with more than 10,000 free online movies and TV shows-including live streaming TV-from ESPN3, Xumo, Pluto, Tubi TV, Cheddar, YouTube, and more".

Roku's ROKU.O stock tumbled almost 14% and was on track for its worst one-day loss since March as investors reacted to the increased competition against the Silicon Valley company's own streaming products.

The firm mentioned these potentialities can even gain Peacock, the newly named streaming offering powered by NBCUniversal assert material launching subsequent April. "With Xfinity xFi and Xfinity Flex, we are including all of that and more with our Internet service, all in one place, on the best screen in the home".


Roku stock has dropped almost 14% after Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) announced it will give away free streaming boxes to internet-only subscribers. Flex users can buy or rent movies and shows via the built-in digital store, and if you're a Movies Anywhere customer you can access your locker from the Flex interface too. The service mature to label $5 a month. They also can use voice control to access their camera feeds, arm or disarm their home security system and find their Xfinity Mobile phone-all on the TV.

Matt Strauss, EVP of Xfinity Products and services for Comcast Cable, described Flex as a "radically easy, aggregated television expertise that personalizes their streaming choices during a sea of apps and services and products".

Comcast has been charging $5 per month for the Infinity Box since it launched in March, whereas Roku can be purchased for a $30 flat fee.
