Research By Movemeber Reveals Men's Mental Health At Work A Problem

Suicide Kills One Person Every 40 Seconds Says WHO

Suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides.

According to the new report, the rate of suicide is on track to increase dramatically - by 40 per cent in the next decade - unless Australia does more to prevent it.

Wentz said other groups that are at an increased risk for attempting and carrying out suicide are veterans, those in the armed forces, law enforcement officers and the elderly.

There has been severe criticism of the delay to the "Protect Life 2" document following the collapse of Stormont and the need for ministerial "sign-off" - despite the north having the highest suicide rate in the UK.

But there are wide disparities across the continent.

Greece and Finland both recorded 3.8 suicide deaths per 100,000 population in 2016 - the lowest rate on the continent. The worst-hit countries were Russian Federation (26.5 per 100,000), Lithuania (25.7 per 100,000) and Belarus (21.4 per 100,000).

A plan to reduce suicide rates in Northern Ireland by 10% over the next five years has been unveiled by the Department of Health.

WHO deplored on Monday that only 38 countries around the world have national suicide prevention strategies.

Dr Leah Quinlivan, a Lead Researcher at the GM PSTRC, said: "One of the studies we're now working on is mental health assessments and psychological therapies following self-harm and we hope this event will help shine a light on it so more people will sign up to the online survey**".

Community pharmacy staff are to be offered training on suicide prevention, based on findings from a new study published today.

"It's highlighting facts about suicide and showing people there's nothing to fear about talking to somebody about mental health".

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, call the 24-hour National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 for free and confidential referral to crisis services.

"We are proud to join hands with White Swan Foundation and hopeful that we will be able to touch the lives of many Twitter users in a positive manner", Kamran said. The best-studied country is Sri Lanka, where a series of bans led to a 70% fall in suicides and an estimated 93 000 lives saved between 1995 and 2015. Our research discovered that, staff felt they could do more to support individuals if they were given training.

It also sought to dispel a number of "common myths" including the wrongly held belief that those who are determined to take their life will do so eventually. More Albertans die by suicide each year than by motor vehicle collisions.

This report complies with World Health Organisation guidelines for responsible reporting on suicide.
