Manchester City falls just shy of Premier League history in walloping Watford

Manchester City hit Watford for eight in English Premier League

Pep Guardiola's side slipped to a shock defeat at Norwich City last weekend but responded in spectacular fashion against the league's bottom side, racing into a five-goal lead inside 18 minutes.

Whether it's in the FA Cup final or just a run-of-the mill league game, Watford just does not know how to handle the most free-scoring team in England.

Bernardo Silva scored a hat trick as Manchester City thrashed Watford 8-0 on Saturday, falling one goal short of tying the record for the heaviest victory in Premier League history. The previous season, Guardiola's team won 6-0 at Watford's Vicarage Road.

After Silva's opener, Sergio Agüero (who has now scored in all opening six league games), Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Nicolás Otamendi all placed their name on the scoresheet in a start to the opening half that will be recalled for a while.

It was the ideal reaction from the champions to last weekend's surprising 3-2 loss at Norwich, the first defeat of their title defense which had left them five points behind Liverpool.

By 18 minutes half of the outfield players for Manchester City had scored and Flores was essaying a stare in the middle-distance, stoic and unyielding, but without betraying the kind of tumult that must have been unfolding inside.

Consider this a warning to Liverpool, which visits Chelsea on Sunday.
