Korea negotiator praises Trump's 'new method' suggestion

Last week, North Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said the North is willing to sit down with the USA in late September, urging Washington to come up with a new "calculation method" acceptable to Pyongyang.

North Korean diplomat Kim Myong Gil in a statement Friday also praised Trump's decision to fire his hawkish former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

"At the moment I am not quite sure what he implied in his suggestion of "new method", he added.

Trump on Wednesday criticized Bolton for advocating the "Libyan model" of unilateral denuclearization for the North.

"It seems he wanted to imply that a step-by-step solution starting with the things feasible first while building trust in each other would be the best option".

North Korea and the United States agreed to restart working-level dialogue during an impromptu meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas in June, and Pyongyang has offered to hold those talks in late September, a move the USA has described as "encouraging".

The White House did not respond when asked to elaborate on Trump's remarks.

Bolton's firing came as the United States and North Korea are gearing up to resume their nuclear negotiation after months of a stalemate.

It did not respond when asked if there could be any contacts with the North Koreans on the sidelines of next week's United Nations General Assembly in NY, which Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are due to attend.

Warmbier's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier of Wyoming, Ohio, were angered by Trump's comments last spring that he took North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "at his word" that he was unaware of any mistreatment of their 22-year-old son.

The talks have stalled since the failed summit but the North has offered a fresh round of meetings.

A former North Korean ambassador to Vietnam, Kim had been known to be the North's counterpart for US top nuclear envoy Stephen Biegun.
