Kansan dies from the lung disease linked to vaping, KDHE reports

Many patients suffering from the lung disease report vaping or using e-cigarettes that contain cannabinoid products, like tetrahydrocannabinol. "I'm extremely alarmed for the health and safety of Kansans who are using vaping products and urged them to stop until we can determine the cause of vaping related lung injuries and death".

The string of mysterious, in some cases fatal, lung illnesses linked to vaping in the US comes as Canada prepares to legalize new categories of cannabis products, including liquid concentrates for vaping, later this year.

Of the 14 Dallas County cases reported, seven of the patients have required respiratory life support.

"Because consumers can not be sure whether any THC vaping products may contain Vitamin E acetate, consumers are urged to avoid buying vaping products on the street, and to refrain from using THC oil or modifying/adding any substances to products purchased in stores", it said.

According to an update from CDC, evidence suggests the lung illnesses are likely linked to a chemical exposure, but the investigation has not identified any single product or substance common to all cases of acute severe pulmonary disease associated with vaping.

"We agree with the FDA".

"We are cautioning people about using e-cigarettes and advise against using unregulated THC-containing vaping products", said Health Director Bruce Anderson.

"We're absolutely concerned about THC, but there's a large number in our data that are reporting (use of) both nicotine and THC", Meaney-Delman said.

E-cigarette products should never be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not now use tobacco products.

A sample of the product used by the OR victim could help both local and federal investigators better understand the outbreak.

"The investigation has not identified any specific substance or e-cigarette product that is linked to all cases". Juul is 35 percent-owned by Altria Group.

Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb on Monday called for government regulation of cannabis products in an interview on CNBC, noting the possible THC link to the illnesses.

While many of those who have fallen ill from mysterious vaping-related issues have been in their late teens, 20s or 30s, Norman said the fact the unnamed Kansas woman was in her 50s is a reminder that older adults may also be at particular risk. "Because consumers can not be sure whether any THC vaping products may contain Vitamin E acetate, consumers are urged to avoid buying vaping products on the street".

He criticized the AMA for "fearmongering about nicotine vaping products" while not mentioning 'the very real risks of vaping illicit THC products'.

Symptoms among the cases reported include shortness of breath, fever, coughing and vomiting, and additional indicators have included headaches, dizziness and chest pain.

Officials are not releasing details about the two patients except to say "One is in southwest Idaho, and the other is in south-central Idaho", said Idaho Department of Health and Welfare spokesperson Niki Forbing-Orr.
