Ireland confirm starting XV for Rugby World Cup opener

The Irish rugby coaching staff have issued a positive update on Rob Kearney and Keith Earls ahead of Sunday's World Cup opener against Scotland.

Assistant coach Andy Farrell declared both Kearney and Earls "available for selection" on Wednesday, but Ireland have opted not to risk either senior star in their pivotal Pool A battle.

"Rob (Kearney) and Keith Earls ran well and trained well".

"Obviously we delight in but another session to head on Friday".

"We're pleased with how things have gone today".

"They're readily accessible. There are a pair of protocols that they must slip to, we must make certain we adhere as some distance as the protocols with the medical workers, nonetheless they are very delighted".

A Scotland victory could make Pool A very interesting with hosts Japan and even Samoa keen to spoil someone's tournament.

"Joey's been training well since Monday, so we're in a good spot", said Farrell.

Only Henderson, front-rowers Cian Healy and captain Rory Best, and halfback Conor Murray were in the match-day 23 against Argentina four years ago, when Ireland lost in the quarterfinals.

"If you take for example this week, which is the week that matters, there's certainly a feel that's brewing of major importance to the squad", said Farrell. "So I suppose that's a culmination of what's happened over the last couple of months".
