Iran hints it could release UK-flagged tanker 'within days'

Iran says it could release UK-flagged tanker within days

Media affiliated with the Syrian regime in Tartus welcomed the Iranian tanker, and thanked Iran for "defying the whole world and US".

Despite Washington's pleas that UK/Gibraltar authorities refrain from releasing the Iranian-flagged Adrian Darya-1 tanker over concerns that it would deliver its 2.1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil to Syria, the ship was released last month.

Tensions between arch-enemies Iran and the USA have soared ever since Washington stepped up its campaign of "maximum pressure" against Tehran and reimposed sanctions after leaving the landmark 2015 nuclear deal past year.

The Adrian Darya 1 has been at the center of a dispute between Tehran and the West, which has raised concerns that the ship meant to violate sanctions by unloading its suspected 2 million barrels of oil in Syria.

According to Daniel Gerber, the firm's CEO, the Trump Administration has been largely successful at curtailing Iran's exports.

Also Sunday, a USA official said the United States would continue to impose sanctions on whoever purchased Iran's oil or conducted business with Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and that no oil waivers would be reissued.

With regard to the seized UK-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero, he said that legal proceedings on the ship's case are underway, expressing hope that the ship will be freed in the near future. "We can talk, but Iran's not getting any sanctions relief until it stops lying and spreading terror", tweeted Bolton.

The US has been trying to seize the tanker since it was released by Gibraltar.

"We had already said that we would sell our oil one way or another and acts of sabotage would have no effect on our plans", Abbas Mousavi said while speaking to IRNA on Sunday. The ship has since been sailing east across the Mediterranean. Hook offered mr Kumar millions of United States dollars if he steered his ship into waters where the USA forces could seize it. The UK's Foreign Office has described the reports of the ship as "deeply troubling".

The official said, "We have no problem with the crew and captain of the ship".

U.S. national security adviser John Bolton alleged, in a tweet on Friday accompanied by a satellite photo, that the Adrian Darya had arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus. On Sunday the Iranian foreign ministry said that ship would be released soon, adding that preparations for the ship's release were at their last stages. The tanker was seized on charges of transporting oil to Syria, thus violating global sanctions.
