Dead After Roller Coaster Derails in Mexico City

At least two people have died and five others have been injured after a rollercoaster carriage flipped over mid-ride at a Mexican theme park yesterday.

The horror occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday at La Feria de Chapultepec in Mexico's capital, killing two men - 18 and 21 years old - and injuring two women, ages 27 and 35, WOFL-TV in Florida reported.

The injured women are still hospitalized under medical observation, prosecutors said, adding that one needed surgery.

Witnesses said the victims fell from the last vehicle of the roller coaster, reported the BBC.

Video circulating on social media showed the vehicle flipping almost upside down and smashing into a metal loop on the rollercoaster.

Authorities are now treating the accident as a case of negligent homicide.

Eyewitness Rosalba Rodriguez told reporters there was nothing out of the ordinary about the ride, which had completed a few loops, until she saw the last carriage fall.

Preliminary investigations indicate a mechanical failure caused the auto to come loose and fall from a height of 10 metres above the ground, said Ulises Lara Lopez, spokesman for the Attorney-General's office.

Local authorities said an investigation has been launched into the incident.

"This is now in the hands of prosecutors, and prosecutors have already taken the necessary steps for an investigation", Miriam Urzua, an official from the civil protection organization, was quoted by the broadcaster as saying.

The park has been closed while further investigations are carried out.
