Colts waive quarterback Chad Kelly after suspension lifts

Chad Kelly

The Colts signed Kelly in May.

The Indianapolis Colts released quarterback Chad Kelly after his return from a two-game suspension, the team announced Wednesday. If he clears waivers, Indianapolis can sign him to its practice squad.

Kelly did well in the preseason with the Colts, beating out Phillip Walker for the third quarterback spot on the roster after he completed 54 of 74 pass attempts while throwing for 583 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Another factor working against him was that the Colts now have two established quarterbacks on the roster in Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer.

Kelly was coming off a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Kelly entered the home and sat down on the couch, where a woman was holding her young child; he was "mumbling incoherently". During the team's bye week, he'd attended the game of his younger brother, and ran out of the stands and onto the field when a late hit on his brother, the team's quarterback, led to a scuffle between both sides. The home-owner chased him from the home with a vacuum cleaner pipe. He spent part of the previous two seasons with the Denver Broncos after being a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
