Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls general election for October 21

Federal election campaign to kick off on Wednesday

After making the announcement, Mr Trudeau left for Vancouver, British Colombia, where he will hold a campaign rally later on Wednesday (local time).

"I believe we can do better", Singh said.

The bulk of the NDP platform has been out for months, including putting a tax on the super wealthy to pay for some of the party's promises.

"Canadians want to know the truth, and right now it seems that barriers are more and more being put up by the Prime Minister", Singh said.

Pollster Tim Powers says we can expect Canadian values to be among the hot topics, with Conservatives hoping to outline the litany of scandals the Trudeau government has weathered, and the Liberals raising red flags on Scheer's questionable record on LGBT issues.

After emerging from Rideau Hall, the Liberal leader spoke about how poverty rates have dropped and job creation is on the rise and attributes both to his party's policies, including the Canada Child Benefit.

The prime minister met the governor general, Julie Payette, to officially request the dissolution of parliament, and formally start the election campaign, which will see party leaders crisscrossing the vast country to pitch to voters.

Trudeau will ask Payette to dissolve Parliament and call for a general election, which the law says must be held October 21.

Since the 2015 campaign there have been changes to the federal elections law. Instead of flying directly in, however, fog has forced his plane to fly into Quebec City first, and the campaign will then travel by bus to the rally location. A new report in The Globe and Mail that published on the eve of the election call citing unnamed sources said the government has not lifted cabinet confidentiality for all witnesses, which has limited the RCMP's examination of potential obstruction of justice in the handling of the Quebec construction and engineering firm's prosecution.

Scheer is calling Trudeau a "liar", arguing the Liberal leader has lost the moral authority to govern and saying his goal for the next five weeks is to convince Canadians of that.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer will kick off his first federal election at the helm of his party from Trois-Rivieres, Que.

When asked what he has to hide, Trudeau told reporters that the government gave out the largest and most expansive waiver of cabinet confidence in Canada's history.
