Canada's Grand Slam champ Andreescu credits winning mindset to meditation

Bianca Andreescu is on top of the tennis world after becoming the first Canadian to win one of the sport's four major championships on Saturday. Looked up to her. The Canadian player then seized her momentum and stormed to a 5-1 lead.

Both Andreescu and Williams will compete in January ASB Classic in Auckland. Knew Williams would not make things easy.

Teenager Bianca Andreescu became Canada's first Grand Slam singles champion Saturday with a rollercoaster 6-3, 7-5 win over 23-time major champion Serena Williams in the US Open final. I've really strived to be like her.

Elbaba is "more motivated than ever" to get back on the tour after watching her friend's dramatic Open title win. When asked what she had to overcome to get over the finish line in the post-match, on-court interview, Andreescu responded: "The crowd".

Following plenty of heartwarming celebration after securing championship point, the Mississauga, Ont. native remained calm and humble during her interview with ESPN's Tom Rinaldi. To most, she is already considered the greatest of all time - in the women's game at the very least.

Williams, who has not won a Slam since the 2017 Australian Open while she was pregnant with daughter Olympia, said the time after her loss was spent pondering why she played so woefully.

"Well, I was thinking, 'OK, Serena, you didn't miss a serve, you lost serve maybe twice in the whole tournament, and you didn't hit a first serve in today, '" she said. But for the most part I just am still here.

That's quite a heady goal.

Andreescu tied Monica Seles, who lifted the 1990 Roland Garros trophy in her fourth major, for the record as the fastest player to win her first Slam title in the Open era.

Bianca Andreescu was congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after her stunning US Open victory over Serena Williams. This one had none of the controversy of 2018, when she got into an extended argument with the chair umpire while being beaten by Naomi Osaka.

The match represented another hard loss for the 37-year-old Williams since her return to tennis last year after the birth of her daughter in 2017. I'm not necessarily chasing a record.

"But I just tried to stay as composed as I could. It's definitely frustrating, you know", Williams said. But I think I'm most proud of how I'm able to get into my zone and I was able to block the crowd too because they were really, really loud yesterday.

"This wasn't the only time I visualized playing in the finals actually against Serena Williams".

"I don't think I've lost a match since March so my confidence is just skyrocketing right now, I just don't want to take anything for granted because there's gonna be weeks where you're going to lose, so right now I'm on cloud nine and hopefully I can just keep the momentum going".

A forehand victor earned the youngster a set point, and Williams duly her gifted her the opener with another double fault.

She won the respect of Williams in Toronto when she consoled the American, and readily admitted that she admires her for all she has done on and off the court. It's also the number of aces Andreescu had in the match and the number of aces and double faults Williams made in the second set. Williams saved the first with an ace but Andreescu secured victory on the next with a blistering forehand return.

Andreescu, 19, is the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam.
