Can Hulkenberg still score a 2020 Formula 1 seat?

Haas has opted for driver continuity despite a hard 2019 campaign so far, as its VF-19 challenger has proved fast over one lap but not competitive enough on longer runs, which the team has partly put down to its struggles with 2019-spec Pirelli rubber.

Grosjean, now 17th in the F1 drivers' championship, has been with the constructor from the start and will have a fifth season in their auto.

Grosjean joined at the inception of the squad in 2016 with Magnussen signing on from 2017.

Haas had looked his best chance of staying on the grid, despite having a hard relationship with Magnussen following track clashes between the two, for a 10th season.

"Their understanding of how we work as a team, and our knowledge of what they can deliver behind the wheel, give us a valued continuity and a strong foundation to keep building our team around".

French driver Romain Grosjean will stay at Haas next season with Dane Kevin Magnussen in an unchanged lineup for a fourth straight year, the Formula One team announced today.

Magnussen has recorded just one podium finish throughout his Formula 1 career, and that was his second place finish in his first career start in the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.

While Haas was interested in Hulkenberg, team boss Guenther Steiner said the team never made a formal offer to Hulkenberg, which the Renault driver confirmed.

"Experience, and the need for it, has been one of the cornerstones of Haas F1 Team", principal Guenther Steiner said in a statement at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Magnussen has scored 18 of those points and has been his usual bullish and aggressive self on track. Haas announced they were retaining Grosjean for next season, and with it, Hulkenberg's 2020 options narrowed even further.

"I'm looking forward to working with Kevin (Magnussen) and the whole team and continuing our journey together". Knowing we can work to make things better, improve our understanding of our situation, and get back to the level of competitiveness we showed last season - these are the things that excite me about 2020. Nobody's satisfied with how the 2019 season has played out, but the determination to turn things around is very much in evidence.

"We've known each other since many years, he's obviously the guy that brought me here [to Renault] as well, that I did the deal with ultimately".

Haas' Romain Grosjean already had a contract for 2020 while 33-year-old Grosjean had faced an uncertain future at the US-owned outfit.
