Apple unveils cheaper iPhones to combat declining phone sales

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks on-stage during a product launch event at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino

There are three sensors - of 12MP each - that have a telephoto lens, a wide lens and an ultra-wide lens.

As expected, Apple has launched a new iPhone - the 11th version of its smartphone - and the big change is in cameras.

Instead what the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro offered were. more incremental camera improvements along the lines of what Android phones already offer. That is exactly what has happened as Apple has officially revealed price cuts for the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and XS Max in India. The iPhone 11 Pro is $999 in the USA and £1,049 in the United Kingdom - which, thanks to Brexit currency rates is even more painful: $999 is £809.

China has the world's largest smartphone market - one that is already crowded with rival handsets with competitive features and price tags.

An iPhone 11 boasted upgrades including a dual-camera system, longer battery life, a muscular computer chip and better water resistance. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are powered by the A13 bionic processor.

According to Apple chief executive Tim Cook, while the retailer anticipated challenges, it didn't foresee the magnitude of economic deceleration seen in these markets, and experienced lesser sales even in larger markets. But while it might resemble the iPad Pro now more than ever, the base-level iPad lacks support for Apple's second-generation Pencil, and still uses a Lightning connector as opposed to the more versatile USB-C option (still, at least the headphone jack hasn't gone anywhere.) The new Apple iPad is available to order today, and will be available in stores on September 30. The Samsung Galaxy S10's 1,440 x 3,040 pixels are bigger than the 1,125 x 2,436 pixels in the iPhone 11 Pro - which makes sense, given the former has a bigger screen than the latter.

That's cheaper than Netflix's most-popular $US13-per-month plan. It's a step up from the current iPad, but well below the iPad Pro in performance and price: it starts at $329 and will be available at the end of September.

Apple unveiled the Watch Series 5 in two variants, only GPS and GPS + Cellular with an "Always-On Retina" display. An Apple TV+ subscription can be shared with up to six family members.

Arcade will have more than 100 exclusive titles for play on Apple's array of hardware. God knows how the show got green-lighted, but based on production values, Apple has clearly poured a ton of money into the concept.

Subscribers can watch Apple TV+ originals both online and offline, ad-free and on demand, on the Apple TV app, which comes pre-installed on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and iPod touch and will soon be on Mac with macOS Catalina.

Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller talks about the new iPhone 11 Pro during an Apple special event on September 10, 2019 in Cupertino, California.
