Andy Ogletree and team U.S. beat Great Britain & Ireland in Walker Cup

USA captain Nathaniel Crosby congratulates his players after their comeback win

"Cole is obviously world No. 1, but it means nothing". This Walker Cup experience is going to be a memory, and a winning memory at that.

Tom Sloman of England also won his match, by two holes over Steven Fisk in the last game out, but by the time he had finished, U.S. celebrations were already well under way.

The USA retains the trophy after their 19-7 win at Los Angeles Country Club two years ago and now leads the overall series 37-9-1.

Scotland's Sandy Scott picked up the first point of the afternoon singles with a fine victory over the previously unbeaten Brandon Wu however, after that it was pretty much one way traffic.

The pair made just one bogey after that.

Despite being behind for long periods of the encounter, they fought back to be all-square at the 14 and a birdie at the par 5 16 put the pair ahead in the contest for the first time.

The Americans claimed the first point of the session thanks to Smalley and Wu winning their match 2&1 against Fitzpatrick and Purcell. A hole later, they closed out their opponents, who missed their final four fairways.

Stewart Hagestad and Akshay Bhatia put another US point on the board just moments later, closing out Harry Hall and Conor Gough, 3 and 2. John Augenstein delivered the clinching point.

"I honestly thought that these guys would let their talent come to the surface", said U.S. captain Nathaniel Crosby, the 1981 U.S. Amateur champion, who was born and raised in Hillsborough. "... But we'll take what we can get".

"These guys are inseparable and they've got a great memory now".

For the first time in 12 years, the Americans celebrated a Walker Cup victory away from home. On the other hand, the last time the US trailed after Day 1 and came back to win was 1963 at Turnberry.

But like rankings, history can generally be disregarded, as well.

One thing that can't be ignored is form.

Pak finished with the best record of the weekend, 3-0-0, while Scott led Great Britain and Ireland at 2-1-1.

Crosby has remained confident in regard to the two, which is why he'll send them out in the final two singles matches - Hammer will face Purcell in the penultimate match while Fisk will be in the anchor spot opposite Sloman.

"I felt like I've been playing really well this week and felt up to the task so I was pleased when I saw they put me out first and saw his name [Hammer]", Fitzpatrick said. "I'm expecting Cole and Steven to come through for us".

Walker, the losing finalist in The Amateur Championship in June, extended GB&I's lead after beating Steven Fisk, also rested for the morning foursomes, by two holes as well.
