Even with a customs pass there is no guarantee the European Union will recognise Eori numbers after 31 October should a no-deal Brexit go ahead.
According to a joint announcement of British Treasury and Revenue & Customs, in the next two weeks, more than 88,000 Value-Added Tax registered companies across the country will be allocated an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number, to enable them to keep trading with customers and suppliers in the European Union (EU) after Brexit.
With Brexit preparations accelerated under the new government, ministers are taking decisive action to speed up the rollout of the scheme to help ensure the smooth transit of goods.
"The letter states that the United Kingdom remains committed to the duty of honest cooperation and will not stand in the way of conduct of EU business during this time", a spokeswoman for the European Commission told a news briefing in Brussels. So far, less than a third, or 72,000, have registered for this Economic Operator Registration and Identification number.
"This includes, as the top priority, work on preparations for Brexit on 31 October and on our future relationship with the European Union, but also on pioneering new trade deals and promoting a truly global Britain".
Johnson, a staunch Brexiteer, is in Germany this week to reiterate his call for the Irish backstop plan to be scrapped to chancellor Angela Merkel.
The EU have repeatedly said that it will not renegotiate the Brexit deal agreed with former prime minister Theresa May and that it won't look to get rid of the backstop mechanism.
'We recognise Portsmouth and Southampton are playing a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition for businesses and residents after we leave the European Union on October 31, and that's why we're giving over £450,000 of additional funding to support these areas to boost their Brexit preparations'. "If you have any delays at borders that will be significant".
An EORI will allow firms to keep trading with customers and suppliers in the Europe after the United Kingdom has left the EU.
But the announcement was given a muted reception by business groups.
Less than 50% of UK-based businesses have begun making contingency plans for a potential no-deal Brexit.
After receiving their EORI, each business will need to decide whether to complete customs declarations themselves or employ a customs agent to do it for them.
