Six candidates short-listed for India's head coach's job Shastri also in fray

Ravi Shastri is the frontrunner to bag the role

The Indian Cricket team will have an announcement made on Monday regarding their head coach as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shortlisted six potential candidates for the position.

Before leaving for the tour of West Indies, captain Virat Kohli had said that he is in favour of Shastri continuing as the head coach of the Indian team despite the criticism he faced following the semi-final ouster from the World Cup. He coached the Indian team to the inaugural WorldT20 title in 2007, and then the CB Tri-Series triumph in Australia the next year.

Simmons also served West Indies for a brief while, helping them to victory in the 2016 World T20 tournament in India before taking over as head coach of the Afghanistan national team in 2017. He was New Zealand's longest serving coach and in 2018 was also appointed coach's representative on the ICC Cricket Committee.

Hesson recently parted ways with IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab.

Shasti's tenure as head coach has produced mixed results as the team lost away Test series against South Africa and England, but won a series in Australia for the first time.

Rajput was then appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians in its first season and then got his big break when he was named head coach of Afghanistan's national team, replacing Pakistan's Inzamam ul Haq.

Confirming the updates, a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India, "These six will give presentation for head coach before CAC".

Former Indian all-rounder Robin Singh is now an experienced coach.

He took over as Afghanistan coach in December 2017 and helped them get ready for their Test debut as well as qualify for the 2019 World Cup.

Simmons played 26 Tests and 143 ODIs for the West Indies, scoring 1,002 runs at 22.26 and 3,675 runs at 28.93 respectively.

However, even before the start of the World Cup, Simmons had announced his plans to step down after it.

He stepped down in June last year with a year to run on his contract, citing family reasons, as Gary Stead took the coaching reins.

Since his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2004, the former India all-rounder has been extensively involved in coaching. At the franchise level, he has been on the coaching team of the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League. He was also the fielding coach of the Indian team from 2007 to 2009.

Former all-rounder Robin Singh represented India in just one Test and 136 ODI between 1989 and 2001. He has also been linked with the Bangladesh men's team, who are without a coach since letting go of Steve Rhodes after the World Cup.

The former Mumbai opener, who also played for India, has also coached domestic side Assam apart from a team in the T20 Mumbai League for two years.

In 2016, he was appointed as the head coach of the Afghanistan national side, and saw the team become an ICC full member under his tenure.
