No, Dak Prescott Is Not Asking for $40 Million a Year

On Aug. 12, it was reported that Prescott, also drafted in 2016 - and due for a new contract in 2020 as a non-first round pick - was offered a contract worth more than $30 million. That would mean more than $30 million per season for Prescott.

Reports on Monday morning suggested Prescott wanted that unprecedented kind of cash in a new deal from the Dallas Cowboys, but several reports have now surfaced refuting those claims.

The $32M to $35M expected for Prescott would still put him in the top-tier of quarterbacks in the National Football League for average salary per season and guarantees per Over The Cap.

Whether the Cowboys are in a position, or can create the salary-cap room, to sign Prescott while negotiating with holdout running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Amari Cooper is unclear. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, however, reports the notion that Prescott is seeking $40 million per year is categorically false. Wilson agreed to a contract earlier this year that averages $35 million annually.

Prescott is 32-16 as a starter in the regular season, with 10,876 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, 25 interceptions and a 96.0 passer rating, so he is vastly underpaid as it stands now.

If Prescott lands a deal that averages at least $30M per season, he'll join Matt Ryan, Wentz, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson as the highest-paid signal callers in the sport.

That said, Prescott has been really good for the Cowboys, so both sides should be motivated to get a deal done.

Dak is entering the final season of his rookie, four-year contract that will pay him a little more than $2 million.
