Jets sign Albert McClellan to address Avery Williamson void

Avery Williamson

The Jets will be without playmaking linebacker Avery Williamson for the season because of a knee injury.

Williamson and cornerback Tevaughn Campbell were in coverage in the end zone, defending running back Brian Hill.

In addition to the Jets placing Williamson on injured reserve, the team signed veteran linebacker Albert McClellan on Saturday, per the team's official Twitter account.

This is a truly devastating blow, as Williamson was one of the best players on the Jets defense. He became an unrestricted free agent in March.

Preseason injuries are an unfortunate part of every new year in the National Football League, and linebacker Avery Williamson and the New York Jets are the latest to fall victim to one. These last two weeks, he's kind of stayed in there a little bit longer.

The top candidates to replace Williamson are Neville Hewitt and Anthony Wint. That's how we roll it. The contract included a $6 million signing bonus and $16 million in guaranteed money.

The 27-year-old was entering his second season with the Jets after signing with the team as a free agent in 2018. He changed positions this season, moving to the weak-inside spot so Mosley could play the middle and call the signals.

It was reported Thursday that NBA star DeMarcus Cousins, a former United Kingdom basketball player who signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, tore the ACL in his left knee during a workout earlier this week. He also had three sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery last season.
