Hotel fire drama for Mickelson at Medinah

Phil Mickelson in action at the BMW Championship

Earlier on Sunday, the BMW Championship's official Twitter account had issued a weather update to fans amid storms in the Chicago area.

The five-time major victor was facing the prospect of missing his allotted slot of 11:52am local time at Medinah on Sunday after the hotel he has been staying at was struck by lightning.

The hotel is located right next to the golf course where the BMW Championship is being held at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill.

Mickelson estimated that he was locked out of his room for almost 90 minutes, and attributed his eventual re-entry and subsequent arrival at Medinah to the power of social media.

Mickelson tweeted that he almost missed his tee time at the final round of the BMW Championship in IL on Sunday after his hotel was struck by lightning, leading to a fire.

Mickelson's tweet - apparently, he grabbed his trusty iPad on the way out - confirmed that he fleed the hotel without his clubs and clothes and in danger of missing his Sunday tee time. Golfweek's Steve DiMeglio reports that firefighters helped him back into his room to get his belongings, and he was able to make it to the course with time to spare.

However, the 49 year old arrived in flip flops and was photographed taking practice swings in the parking lot as he rushed to prepare for his round.

"EMT's were awesome! I'm going to make it. Turns out my clubs acted as a fire retardant".

He told her at one point, "I tweeted it".

Tee times had been moved back due to forecasted thunderstorms on Sunday morning, with American Justin Thomas holding a six-shot lead heading into the final round.
