Groups decry Saudi hosting of Joshua-Ruiz bout

Even though the date and venue of the rematch of Andy Ruiz Jr and Anthony Joshua has been fixed for December 7 in Saudi Arabia, the Mexican is reportedly refusing to sign unless he gets a much higher purse.

Ruiz Jr scored a shock victory over Joshua in June, and Joshua quickly activated a rematch clause in his contract after the fight.

The high-profile December 7 duel, dubbed "Clash on the Dunes", will see Britain's Joshua trying to win back the IBF, WBA and WBO titles he sensationally lost to American fighter Ruiz in NY in June. If his Snapchat is anything to go by, he seems to have cut a considerable amount of muscle off his physique, as he prepares for his highly-anticipated second encounter with Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia.

The New York venue was in the running to host the rematch, as was Cardiff's Principality Stadium, however Diriyah, where the first Saudi State was established in 1745, saw off the competition.

He seemed to recover in the fourth and fifth, but was struggling with a bloodied nose by the end of the sixth. In the seventh, Ruiz Jr dropped Joshua twice more, and the referee chose to stop the fight.

The Sun reported earlier Friday morning that the host country put up close to $100m guaranteed for the contest to take place in Riyadh.

In February this year, the Saudis hosted a first European Tour golf event which was won by former world number one Dustin Johnson; while the world's most grueling motor sports race, the Dakar Rally, will be raced in the Kingdom in 2020.

Amnesty said Joshua should "inform himself of the human rights situation and be prepared to speak out about Saudi Arabia's abysmal human rights record".

In July this year, British boxer Amir Khan won the WBC worldwide welterweight title with a fourth round stoppage of Australian Billy Dib in Jeddah. I started seeing women not wearing head scarves.

United Kingdom fight fans can expect "AJ" and "The Destroyer" to make their ringwalks any time after 11pm (GMT), as Saudi Arabia is two hours ahead of the UK.

"It's my stomping ground, I went out there so let's do the rematch here, and I think it will be fantastic before the year is out and I'll definitely be having a lovely New Year with my family".
