FAA Bans MacBook Pro Laptops With Recalled Batteries

"The FAA is aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops". Those that have already gone battery replacements are exempt as well as those that have not been marked as such by Apple's own tool. The FAA's 2016 alert to carriers warned of the risk of the "potential risk of catastrophic hull loss" due to transporting lithium batteries if they caught fire and exploded.

If your model is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), then you will need to go to this page and enter your serial model, which is located in the System Information app or in the "About This Mac" panel.

"The battery issue affects a limited number of 15" MacBook Pro units that are sold between September 2015 to February 2017.

This week, four airlines with cargo operations managed by Total Cargo Expertise - TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy, and Air Transat - implemented a ban, barring the laptops from being brought onto the carriers' planes as cargo, according to an internal notice obtained by Bloomberg News. That basically boiled down to banning products with recalled batteries from being stowed in cargo or even as carry-on baggage. It is "unclear what efforts will, if any", will be made at US airports, the network added. But the fact is that it will be a pain to screen the affected units at the boarding gate - and that could affect millions of MacBook Pro users.

The FAA linked to the news of the Apple recall in that tweet.

The MacBook Pro isn't the first consumer tech device to be barred from airlines. Recently recalled laptops like those from HP Inc. may also be banned by the FAA's rules. The flames can be extinguished with water and flight attendants are trained how to address it.

If your computer is flagged but it has already went to Apple for fix, then you will have to show proof of the fix to the airline people and hope they let you in. It has already alerted major airlines about it, telling them to adhere to the agency's 2016 safety instructions for devices with recalled batteries. Only the headline has been changed.
