Death toll rises to 93 in floods, mudslides in south India

Rahul Gandhi To Visit Flood Hit Constituency Camps In Kerala Today

The death toll in rain-related incidents rose to 92 in Kerala even as 59 people are still missing, following torrential rains, floods and landslides in various districts since August eight in the state. However, an orange alert has been issued for six districts.

Incessant rains in the past four days have caused 80 landslides and displaced more than 300,000 people.

The maximum deaths - 27 - have been reported from Wayanad, an area spread over three districts - Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram.

Taking to Facebook, Gandhi appealed people to donate water bottles, sleeping mats, blankets, sanitary napkins, biscuits, rice, sugar, vegetables at different collection centres in Malappuram district.

At Puthumala in Wayanad, where seven people are still missing, Tuesday's search yielded no results. A total of 4,08,322 people have been rescued from the district and evacuated to safer places, the data showed. As many as 1,224 relief camps are now operational in the state with 3,93,956 people taking shelter in them, while 372 medical teams have been deployed.

According to government estimates, 80 taluks spread across 17 districts are now affected.

With the monsoon season playing havoc in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, Volkswagen India is giving a helping hand for its flood-affected customers in these areas. There is a tremendous tragedy in Wayanad.

"Forty lives have been lost in Maharashtra, 32 in Karnataka and 24 in Gujarat.

The Central government needs to pay attention and aggressively support the people of these states", he had told reporters at Kalpetta after attending a review meeting with government officials on the flood situation on Monday. Steps should be taken to restore power supply and drinking water distribution in rain-hit areas, he said.

At the camps, he interacted with the people, asked them about their loss and the things they need.

"Political partisanship is least expected in times of natural calamities and unfortunate deaths of people", the Politburo statement added.

Vijayan will visit Malappuram and Wayanad districts on Tuesday.

Accompanied by revenue minister E. Chandrasekharan and chief secretary Tom Jose, the chief minister would also be visiting relief centres in Malappuram and hold discussions with people's representatives and officials. "The home minister in his aerial survey of flood-hit areas chose to go only to BJP ruled states of Maharashtra & Karnataka".

"Starting tomorrow, rains will be heavy in Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Idukki till Wednesday, while on Thursday it's going to be isolated rains", said an IMD official.

While the water has started receding in many flood-affected districts, the weather department has predicted "light to moderate rains" till in north interior Karnataka.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared red alert for Kerala's Ernakulam on Tuesday. Hence, it was just the routine morning prayers for them.
