Brazil prisoner who dressed up as daughter to escape is found dead

Gang leader Clauvino da Silva was found dead in Bangu prison after his failed jailbreak

A man who authorities identify as jailed Brazilian drug trafficker Clauvino da Silva, alias "Baixinho", which means "Shorty", wearing a mask and feminine clothing, as his hands are confined behind his back at a prison complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 4, 2019.

A Brazilian gang leader tried to escape from prison by dressing up as his daughter when she visited him behind bars and walking out the penitentiary's main door in her place, authorities said Sunday. An investigation has been opened.

Silva was 42 and was serving a sentence of 73 years and 10 months for drug trafficking.

He was trying to pass as his 19-year-old daughter, who was visiting him that day.

Prison officers also revealed that the complex had been on a complete lock down for weeks prior to the capture, seizing phones as well as jewelry from visitors, leaving only the most unique and unpredictable of of escape attempts available.

He was caught wearing a plastic mask, a long black wig and women's clothes. Underneath is a man in his 40s.

Silva, a member of Brazil's Red Command drug faction, had been serving a almost 73-year sentence when he tried to flee on Saturday with the help of a silicone mask, a black bra and wig, and a skin-tight T-shirt emblazoned with three pink doughnuts.

It's not totally clear how much da Silva's daughter knew about his plan.

"They suspect that one of them, a pregnant woman who was not searched by the guards, had hidden the wig and the glasses used by Silva on herself", the broadcaster reports.

Silva previously escaped from prison by slipping into the sewer system of the jail he was being kept in, but was later apprehended. According to Globo, he was among a group of at least 30 prisoners who escaped but were soon recaptured.
