After its private debut at an event on August 15, the Acura Type S Concept will make its public debut at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on August 16. Not only does the auto give us a pretty darn good idea of what to expect from future Acura models, it also previews the return of the Type S trim, which is good news for those hoping that Acura would get its performance lineup back in order - aside from the NSX, natch.
In this case, it's the sort of "Precision Crafted Performance" that visually straddles sedan and coupe, and does so very well indeed. That hasn't been seen on a new Acura since the Acura TL Type S back in 2008, marking a performance variant of the vehicle. What we see here "will heavily influence the character" of the production sports sedan. Typically, Type S variants offered sportier styling, higher output engines and suspension tuning/brakes to match.
"We've been dreaming about a new performance-focused Acura concept vehicle since the Precision Concept debuted". The snazzy Type S Concept paves the way for an upcoming souped-up TLS Type S.
The Type S Concept showcases new elements of Acura design including next-generation, four-lamp Jewel Eye LED headlights, an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille, and "Chicane" daytime running lights (also doubles up as turn signals) and taillights, both drawing inspiration from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype race auto.
Starting up front, the model has an aggressive fascia with a prominent Diamond Pentagon grille. It all gradually opens up to muscular rear wheel arches, emphasising the car's wide track.
Out back, the concept features a unique trunk with a carbon fiber spoiler and a creased centerline that echoes the one on the hood. More LEDs appear at the back, alongside a forged carbon spoiler, quad chrome exhaust outlets, and a sizable diffuser.
Down the sides, minimalistic lines create a narrow, athletic waist, and the rear is crisp and clean, with forged carbon highlighting the spoiler, underbody and front side aero elements, and the spokes on its eye-catching 21-inch rims. It's unclear what the second Type S auto might be, or indeed whether it will be another sedan or one of Acura's SUVs.
What you see here is a pretty strong preview of what the upcoming TLX Type S will look like. Stopping ability comes courtesy of drilled Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers.
