Three Potential Trade Destinations for Melvin Gordon

Melvin Gordon

Gordon has struggled at times to find room to operate in the Chargers backfield - despite averaging 5.1 yards per carry in 2018, Gordon averages just 4.0 yards per carry over 897 career carries.

Running back Melvin Gordon has informed the Los Angeles Chargers that unless he receives a new contract, he will not report to training camp and he will demand a trade, his agent Fletcher Smith told ESPN.

Gordon reportedly received an extension offer from the Chargers that did not align with the contracts of other top running backs such as Le'Veon Bell and Todd Gurley.

Entering his 5th-year team option, Gordon is due to make $5.6M - less than half of his projected market value according to Spotrac.

After not scoring a touchdown as a rookie in 14 games, Gordon has 28 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns over the past three seasons.

From Gordon's perspective, the Chargers have shown weakness without his presence.

Gordon ranks fourth in total rushing yards since 2016 and his 28 rushing touchdowns during that stretch is tied for second among all running backs.

Gordon, the No. 15 overall pick from the 2015 NFL Draft, is a two-time Pro Bowler. For instance, look at the Los Angeles Rams, who made Todd Gurley the highest-paid running back in the National Football League last offseason (four years, $60 million). He will also demand that the Chargers trade him.
