Steve Bruce confirms talks with Newcastle

Newcastle set to head to China without a boss as Bruce wait goes

Steve Bruce has confirmed that there have been talks about him becoming Newcastle United's next manager but insisted that there is "nothing really to talk about" at the moment.

After the departure of Champions League victor Rafa Benitez, the Premier League side are turning to former Manchester United defender Bruce to take over at St James' Park for the foreseeable future.

Bruce told Sky Sports News, "It was over with before it started".

Bruce was confronted on the sideline by an Owls supporter during their 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Lincoln at Sincil Bank this afternoon. It's in the hands of the club.

It's understood the two clubs spent Thursday attempting to reach an agreement over compensation with Bruce having indicated he wanted to talk to the club he supported as a boy.

"There is nothing really to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of a compromise". My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much. "It's in the hands of both clubs and we will see what develops over the next 24 to 48 hours".

The squad is due to head out to the Far East for the Premier League Asia Trophy at the weekend and hoped to have Rafael Benitez's replacement in post before doing so.

The majority of fans in attendance gave Bruce a huge reception, with chants throughout from the away end.

'Mike Ashley has worked out an incentive-driven salary which will see Bruce collect an extra payment for every place Newcastle finish above the bottom three'.
