Spurs Attempt To Hijack Arsenal Move For William Saliba

William Saliba

Tottenham are reportedly close to beating their north London rivals Arsenal to the signing of William Saliba for £26.9million.

The report states the 18-year-old has already agreed to a five-year contract with the Gunners and just has a few minor details to sort out. Arsenal, however, are still confident that the player will keep his word and join the club.

The youngster is expected to continue his development at Saint-Etienne for a further season as the Ligue 1 outfit are demanding a loan to be included in the deal, which could ultimately benefit Tottenham if they were to acquire him.

Emery's limited transfer budget has made it hard for the Spaniard to land his top targets, with Celtic demanding £25m for left-back Kieran Tierney while a £40m bid for Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha was given short shrift as the Eagles demand £80m.

However, Tottenham have made a last-ditch attempt to secure the services of the France Under-20 global by offering a marginally better deal.

The Gunners have a broad agreement with Saint-Etienne, which would see Saliba stay at the French club on loan, but still have work to do on the bonus structure, which has not been agreed.

But Spurs, who signed Tanguy Ndombele for a club record £53.8m this summer, have submitted a late bid.

With a £25m release clause, the centre-back has been linked with Manchester United but it is believed the Red Devils are looking for a younger option.
