Rookie Wolff eagles 18 to leap DeChambeau, win 3M Open

Canada's Adam Hadwin tees off on the 14th hole in the second round of the 3M Open

Wolff is also just the third player after Tiger Woods and Ben Crenshaw to win an NCAA individual championship and a PGA Tour title in the same year.

DeChambeau's closing 66 earned him a tie for second alongside Collin Morikawa, another rookie American, who had to settle for a birdie at the last as he too finished with a 66 including six birdies in his final eight holes.

"It's something that changed my life forever", Wolff told reporters of making the winning putt. "I've always had this dream of going to school for four years and coming out here and living what I wanted to do since I was a little kid".

"When I birdied 10 to get to 7-under, I was kind of thinking 59, but I kind of knew I had to stay in the moment", Wolff said. "It's a dream come true". Wolff, who made his PGA debut in February at Phoenix on a sponsor's exemption, has a unique swing, kicking his legs up as he brings the club around to make contact on long shots. He scrambled for birdie on No. 18 after an errant tee shot.

The shot of the day belonged to Charles Howell III, whose approach from 80 yards at the par-four seventh sailed over the flag before rolling back into the hole for his second eagle in a round of 66.

Wolff and DeChambeau each birdied the 10th, and they were temporarily tied atop the leaderboard after DeChambeau birdied 13. But Wolff notched back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15, leaving DeChambeau a stroke back even after he birdied 16. "I've been able to make some birdies out here and I hope to keep it up one more day", Morikawa said. Instead, the putt got almost halfway down before cruelly lipping out, setting the stage for Wolff's heroics at 18.

The 3M Open marks the start of the Tour's final stretch run of 10 events plus the British Open.

Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. (67) and Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C. (69) were 14 under, while Abbotford's Nick Taylor (68) and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., (70) were 10 under.
