Phillies pitcher (elbow) likely needs surgery, report says

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb of The Athletic, that could have something to do with a bone spur Arrieta has in his pitching elbow, which will likely require surgery.

"I don't think all of them are out of coincidence", the NY mets' third baseman said of the 12 instances in which him and his teammates were hit by Phillies pitching this season.

After giving up 11 hits and hitting three batters in 4 1/3 innings as the Phillies lost 6-5 to the Mets on Sunday, the pitcher questioned his physicality. He is 8-7 with a 4.67 ERA in 18 starts this year. The latest drilling came on a changeup by Arrieta and led to Frazier getting ejected.

Arrieta underwent knee surgery early in 2019 but was ready to pitch by the start of the regular season. In 12 games between the two National League East ballclubs, 12 Mets have been hit by Phillies pitchers.

In the bottom of the fifth, for reasons that Arrieta later claimed were due to the injury, he followed a strikeout to Michael Conforto with a hit-by-pitch to Todd Frazier, prompting a heated reaction from Frazier that almost ended in a benches-clearing dispute between the teams. He was subsequently ejected for arguing home plate umpire Tripp Gibson's decision to issue warnings to both benches.

"If you're going to hit our guys, we get our chance", Frazier insisted.

The Phillies and Mets played a day before the All-Star break, then get time to cool off. "But we'll see. We'll see in the next couple of days".

The Phillies scored all the runs they'd need for Nola in the first, when Hoskins (RBI double), J.T. Realmuto (two-RBI double) and Bruce (RBI single) laced together consecutive run-scoring hits against Mets starter Zack Wheeler.

Nola held the Mets hitless into the sixth inning, Bruce homered twice and the Phillies quieted NY with a victory Sunday.
