OH confirms first case of measles this year

Measles case found in Ohio Learn about the symptoms and prevention

The patient in this case was infected outside of the state and has since recovered, but not before coming into contact with some people who are believed to be unvaccinated, according to the Ohio Department of Health's Jose Rodriguez.

Ohio State Epidemiologist Sietske de Fijter said Friday that a new case has been confirmed in Stark County.

Twenty-eight states, including neighboring states to OH, already have measles cases with several having confirmed outbreaks. This is the first confirmed case of the measles in OH since 2017. The case is the first confirmed instances of measles in two years.

"Vaccinations save lives, period. I urge everyone who can, to get vaccinated", said Amy Acton, director of the state department of health.

The WA Country Health Service's Dr Tania Wallace told the West Australian that parents were being urged to ensure their children were vaccinated against measles according to the immunisation schedule.

"Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes and a cough followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body", Dr Sheppeard said.

The disease also can cause more serious symptoms, such as such as diarrhea, ear infections, pneumonia, brain infection, seizures and death.

Complications from measles are more common among children younger than 5 years of age, adults older than 20 years of age, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems.

"One thing is really important - vaccination is critical". "We are lucky to have a high vaccination rate in Stark County and OH, so the vast majority of the public is protected". Thursdays and 3 to 6 p.m. the first Thursday of the month.
