No charges against NY police in choking death of black man

After years of silence, federal prosecutors said Tuesday that they won't bring criminal charges against a white New York City police officer in the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner, a black man whose dying words - "I can't breathe" - became a national rallying cry against police brutality.

The mayor told reporters that instead, he called Rev. Al Sharpton to "explain the state at play" and the "facts", noting a decision is likely to be made by the NYPD at the end of August and asked him to pass the message along to the Garner family.

The US Division of Justice has said this is no longer going to carry federal fees against a Unusual York Metropolis police officer within the 2014 death of Eric Garner.

Garner, a 43-300 and sixty five days-frail African American, modified into detained for allegedly promoting free cigarettes and died after being placed in a chokehold by the officer.

The resolution comes at some point sooner than the statute of limitations modified into place to expire - on the fifth anniversary of the interplay with police that led to Garner's death.

Calling Garner's death "a awful tragedy", Donoghue said that "having thoroughly investigated the surrounding circumstances, the department has concluded that the evidence would not support federal civil rights charges against any officer".

The officer has been on desk duty since he was seen in bystanders' cellphone videos putting Garner in a prohibited chokehold and wrestling him to the ground on July 17, 2014.

Eric Garner, a father of six, was detained by NY police on July 17 that year for allegedly illegally selling cigarettes in Staten Island. He has been suspended with pay. Pantaleo denies he used a chokehold.

The deem has yet to ship a recommendation to the police commissioner, who will establish the closing resolution about whether to discipline or fire Mr Pantaleo.

In announcing that it would not bring charges against Pantaleo, Justice Department officials said they could not conclusively determine whether Pantaleo willfully committed misconduct, which must be established to prove that he violated Garner's civil rights.

"Five years ago, my son said "I am unable to breathe" 11 instances".

"Reforms over the last five years have improved relations between our police and our communities", de Blasio said in a statement, adding that crime was at record lows and 150,000 fewer people were arrested last year than the year before he took office. "We need justice and we need it now".

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said: "Years ago, we put our faith in the federal government to act".

De Blasio also said that it was a mistake for the city to wait for federal prosecutors to finish investigating Garner's death before the police department began disciplinary proceedings.

Officials suggested U.S. media that the closing resolution to no longer carry fees modified into made by Attorney Overall William Barr.

Amid those demonstrations, a man angry about the Garner and Brown cases ambushed and fatally shot two New York City police officers as they sat in their cruiser, further shocking the city and leading to the creation of the pro-police Blue Lives Matter movement.
