Nigeria vs Algeria: What Samuel Chukwueze said about AFCON semi-final clash

First goal for Nigeria excites Chukwueze

Nigeria's preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Algeria on Sunday has not been affected by the fact that many view the Super Eagles as favourites for the title, says Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi.

"Musa has been our biggest threat, every time Musa had the ball, the defenders were on their back foot, they were under a lot of pressure". Although they lost 2-1, the then Green Eagles defeated Egypt 3-2 in the third place match for their first AFCON bronze medal.

Nigeria's route to the semi-finals of the 2019 AFCON was definitely not as smooth as Algeria's.

The Eagles beat stubborn South Africa 2-1 in Wednesday's quarterfinal match which saw Bafana Bafana threaten to push the game into extra time before William Troost-Ekong saved Nigeria with a late victor. However, as we have previously seen in this year's tournament, no match is won in advance. We have a lot of strikers (7), we cannot play all the strikers.

Further words of encouragement came from President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) following Wednesday night's victory, with the president urging "the team and their handlers to be focused, disciplined and scale the remaining two hurdles to glory".

Interestingly, more dollars will be showered on them, if they will score more goals in the must win semi-final clash with Algeria.

"What is good for Nigeria is that we qualified out of the group, in the Round of 16, we saw an improved team when we played against defending champions Cameroon".

"All teams are prepared to recover quickly".

This much was proved in the game against Cote d'Ivoire when Slimani, coming in for Bounedjah, nearly got the victor at extra time but for a fine save by the Elephants' goalkeeper.

"Against South Africa, we started very well and it was a very good game".

"Hopefully, we will get the result". "We just have to try and win it. Algeria is one of the great teams in Africa", he said. The team spirit and character will drive Nigeria through but don't forget, we're in Egypt to make our mark and so far, we've been doing it.
