Netflix to adapt Cuphead video game into an animated comedy series

Studio MDHR tweeted the news on Tuesday along with a peek at Cuphead's DLC expansion, The Delicious Last Course, due out in 2020.

It's the first example of King Features plan to expand its character franchises across more media entertainment outlets, which it first announced back in February.

Cuphead originally launched in 2017 as an Xbox One-exclusive title and was later brought to Nintendo Switch earlier this year.

Platforming game Cuphead is heading to the small screen through a new Netflix animated series called The Cuphead Show! Featuring the eponymous Cuphead and his co-op buddy Mugman, the series will take a cue from the game's story in which the duo make a deal with the devil. Those included works like Betty Boop and Popeye.

The series will be executive produced by C.J. Kettler (Carmen Sandiego) on behalf of King Features, while the brothers that created Cuphead, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, will serve as executive producers for Studio MDHR. Netflix and Studio MDHR weren't immediately available for comment. Lastly, Cosmo Segurson will co-executive produce. Meanwhile, Netflix Animation will produce with Emmy and Annie award victor Dave Wasson, who is also set to executive produce. The world presented in the game is positively twisted and the hand-drawn aesthetic is something that's been missing from the realm of animation for far too long.
