The outage also impacted several subway stations in the city, forcing passengers on trains at the time the power cut to be escorted through tunnels and dark stations by MTA employees. "It's completely dark (in the station); people were coming up using their flashlights on their phones".

Freddi Goldstein, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning in Iowa for president, said that the mayor had been briefed on the blackout and that the Office of Emergency Management was responding. The New York City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, said on Twitter that there was a major disturbance at Con Edison's 49th Street substation, and that the utility was working to fix it.

The outages come 42 years to the day of an extensive blackout that affected much of the city. NYPD and @FDNY are continuing to respond to calls in the area, thank you for your patience.

Officials with Con Edison later tweeted that they were working to restore electricity to customers and businesses primarily on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

The outage also saw some Broadway shows cancel their Saturday evening performances, including Best Musical Tony victor Hadestown and King Kong. She had planned to take the A train home when the power outage occurred. Trains were stuck when the power went out but those trains were moved into stations.

While trains are still running despite the outage, the stations without power are being bypassed by trains until power is restored. It advised people to stay away from underground stations.

The power outage comes on the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 Blackout which plunged most of New York City into two days of darkness.
