Ice cream-licking suspect identified as juvenile

According to a spokesperson with the Lufkin Police Department, cited by CBS News, the case will be handed over to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department because the suspect is a minor.

A Texas Walmart has an employee standing guard to protect its Blue Bell ice cream, after a woman was spotted grabbing a tub and licking it before putting it back in the freezer, in a viral video last week. She closes up the ice cream and puts it back in the freezer in the store, which has been identified as being a Lufkin, Texas Walmart.

Police in Lufkin are also looking to talk to the man who recorded the ice cream-licking incident. Lufkin Police say she turned out to be a teenaged girl from San Antonio whose boyfriend lives in Lufkin.

Blue Bell's statement, meanwhile, did not address multiple requests on social media to add protective seals to their containers. Police are still discussing if her boyfriend will face charges in this case.

What made this case hard is that a "catfish" with a similar screen name (within one letter of the suspect's screen name) began taking credit for it. Blue Bell has now confirmed that they have managed to track down the contaminated ice cream and remove it from the store.

Lufkin police said the "Blue Bell licker" is a 17-year-old juvenile from San Antonio.

In an update on its Facebook page, officers wrote that detectives have identified and spoken with the suspect and her boyfriend.

Twitter user @GAYSHAWNMENDES posted a video of himself this week at what appears to be a CVS with the caption, "I love ice cream". The company responded to their messages, assuring consumers that they "take the issue very seriously".

The police department had said in a statement on July 3 that the offender could face a second-degree felony charge of tampering with a consumer product. Repost yourself doing this.

The viral video has been viewed millions of times on social media and inspired some copycat ice cream lickers.

Police say there were roughly four to six women with similar screen names and appearances that law enforcement had to eliminate, including the catfish account, before identifying the actual suspect.
