Ford re-recalls Focus to prevent fuel tank damage

Ford Focus Recalled Over Stall Risk

The issue is actually connected to another recall from October, when almost 1.5 million Focus cars were recalled for the same issue.

Ford has issued a recall for approximately 58,000 Focus vehicles that were already repaired in a previous campaign.

According to the new information released by the company, the vehicles included in the new recall did not receive the software calibration that detects a malfunctioning canister purge valve. That recall was meant to fix a problem with the gas tank that could cause a loss of power, inaccurate fuel gauge readings, or an indicator light signaling a malfunction has occurred, the automaker says. This second recall includes the 2012-2017 Ford Focus with the 2.0-liter direct-injection I4, as well as the 2013-2014 Ford Focus ST. "Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition". The former carries build dates between October 7, 2010 and July 23, 2012, while the latter has a build-date range from May 3, 2012 to December 11, 2014.

Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module in affected vehicles; if necessary, they will replace the canister purge valve, as well as possibly the carbon canister itself or the fuel tank.

Until their cars are fixed, owners are advised to keep at least a half tank of fuel in their cars to be on the safe side.
