Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a fantastic sequel to its predecessor and continues the tradition of combining the whimsical Dragon Quest world with a building simulator not dissimilar to Minecraft, but bringing with it some new and exciting twists.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Dragon Quest IX, the development team held live streaming in which several topics were discussed and, among these, also the hypothetical arrival of a remake of the game. It also takes a while before the multiplayer experience can properly take off and by then you are just too invested in the story mode to bother with it. There is online multiplayer, a feature not in the original Dragon Quest Builders, but I was perfectly content to play by myself. There are also times when you might be joined by another NPC depending on the mission.
If you like the creativity of Minecraft-styled games but want a little more out of it than just mindless gameplay, Dragon Quest Builders 2 has a good blend of both.
As you explore the islands, find new recipes and build ever more complicated structures you are bound to come across the nasties that roam around the map.
At first, Dragon Quest Builders 2 struck me as odd. You gain most of this by completing quests and fulfilling requests. As you progress, you'll unearth crafting and building recipes. It changes the analog controls so that when you press back on the stick you'll just slide backwards while still facing forward, making it easier to lay down rows of objects in quick succession. The recreation will permit you to run into NPCs and landmarks from the Dragon Quest collection, through strolling to them in actual life. This makes it rather trivial to defeat the early night monsters and they are an excellent source of XP as you start out. The game tells you that it's best to go to bed at night and avoid staying out. Time will move on until the morning, where you'll wake in a night monster-free world ready for another day of exploring. If you liked the original Dragon Quest Builders, this is a must-play.
Oh, and you can play in first-person now! There are also items such as Scallywinkles or wheat, which can only be consumed once they've been cooked. Instead, if you're inventory is full, items are placed in your backpack which has huge amounts of storage. Here are some of the best tips for newcomers to DQ Builders 2.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 actually places a bit more emphasis on the story as expected. It's a good way of finding out the things you need to do or keep an eye out for when creating your flawless space. It also became really frustrating collecting materials.
A lot of the fun in Builders 2, however, comes down to multiplayer, which is new to the Builders series.
Additionally, when the game tasks you with building enormous projects, the villages, farmers, soldiers etc all pitch in and help build. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in every right a proper sequel. There are so many items to find and invent. For one, there's an overload of dialogue-sometimes, I just want the banter between Malroth and the other townspeople to stop so I can do a quest.
