British Open: What you missed overnight in Round 1 at Portrush

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy, 30, grew up in nearby Holywood, and he set the Royal Portrush course record with a 61 when he was 16.

The 2014 Open Champion snap-hooked his first tee shot of the day out of bounds left, then needed six more shots-including taking a penalty drop for an unplayable lie and missing a four-footer for 7-en route to a quadruple-bogey 8.

But his fortunes this time around were not so forgiving as McIlroy went wide and out of bounds in an internal area of the course off the tee. He chipped onto the green but missed a 6-foot putt.

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland - Rory McIlroy's start in the Open Championship in his native Northern Ireland couldn't have been much worse.

It was a nightmare start for the man who carries the weight of so many expectations from his countrymen this week.

His early form at Portrush has seen McIlroy, who was the tournament favourite at 8/1 with SportNation.bet before the start of play, drift as far back as 33/1.

McIlroy's tournament began horribly.

Through eight holes, McIlroy is now plus-3, eight shots back of the three players tied for the lead at minus-4.

He was met with a raucous reception on the first tee, but Rory McIlroy endured an opening-hole meltdown at Royal Portrush. It's the first ace at the Open Championship since 2016.

His best Opens in recent times have come in fast running conditions - at Carnoustie previous year and Murfield in 2013 - when he can keep driver in the bag and two-iron his way around.
