Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has invited his son Eduardo to become ambassador to the United States on Friday. "He's friends with Donald Trump's children".
Since the president confirmed the possibility of the nomination on Thursday, he has been criticized both for the appearance of nepotism and for his son's inexperience in diplomacy to occupy what is regarded as one of the most complex positions in Brazil's diplomatic service.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, 35, who is now serving as a congressman and advises his father on foreign affairs, told reporters he would accept the post if it were offered.
On Friday, Bolsonaro said in a Facebook Live that he "is not concerned" about the criticism he was receiving over the nomination idea. The ambassadorship has been vacant since January 1, when Jair Bolsonaro took office. "Eduardo Bolsonaro's nomination for ambassador is unacceptable", tweeted Senate opposition leader Randolfe Rodrigues.
Mr Bolsonaro uses several of his members of the family as legitimate advisers.
Though he is now the chief of the Foreign Liaison Committee of the House of Representatives, he has not actually held any diplomatic position before.
The congressman added he had already "fried hamburgers" in the United States and "improved my English" there, the daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported.
He accompanied the Brazilian leader to a private meeting with US President Donald Trump during a diplomatic visit to Washington in March.
Eduardo would must resign as a congressman if he did take in the place of ambassador.
