Barry expected to bring rain to Central Indiana

Barry Williams talks to a friend on his smartphone as he wades through storm surge from Lake Pontchartrain on Lakeshore Drive in Mandeville La

Barry is the first hurricane to hit the usa mainland in 2019 during the Atlantic hurricane season.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation reports that restrictions remain in effect on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge. It nevertheless packed a serious punch as it moved inland, though there were few indications of widespread flooding. The Mississippi River is swollen from springtime floodwaters.

"No Mississippi River levee has been overtopped, and not a single levee in the state of Louisiana - as of right now - has failed or breached", he said.

New Orleans airport also saw state-wide cancellations of all major flights in and out of the city on Saturday and has now reported that Barry will leave 2 ft (60 cm) of rain over the period of the next 2 days.

Residents in Louisiana and its largest city, New Orleans, hunkered down in preparation for rising waters brought by Barry.

"This storm still has a long way to go before it leaves this state", he said. "We are lucky; we were spared".

What this westerly shift in the track means for Acadiana is more of us, including Lafayette and New Iberia, will be on the sloppy side of the system giving us a better chance to see sustained winds of 50-60 miles per hour for much of the afternoon and evening, leading to the possibility of more power outages throughout Acadiana.

Barry reinforced into a hurricane as it dumped downpour and released strong winds on the Louisiana coast, the National Hurricane Center said.

Barry was expected to continue weakening and become a tropical depression Sunday, moving over Arkansas on Sunday night and Monday.

A number of other southern parishes were affected, including Jefferson Parish outside of New Orleans.

Voluntary evacuations were issued across New Orleans for areas that are not protected by the levees.

Three Waffle House locations in Barry's path are closed - one of the factors the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses to determine how bad a storm is. "Rain soaked soils will make it easier for trees to come down in some of the gusty winds occurring across [southwest] MS and [northeast] Louisiana".

The National Weather Service warned that tornadoes were possible across portions of southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, western Alabama, eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee.

Flash flood watches cover all but the northwest portion of Louisiana, the entirety of MS and much of eastern Arkansas where widespread rainfall totals of at least 2 to 4 inches are predicted while small pockets over 10 inches are possible.

Louisiana's National Guard had some 3,000 soldiers deployed around the state.

Levees were overtopped Saturday in Plaquemines Parish, southeast of New Orleans, where mandatory evacuations were put in place for residents of low-lying areas earlier this week.

The Atchafalaya River swallowed the waterfront pedestrian promenade in Morgan City, which was entirely without power, as about 10 members of America's Cajun Navy citizen rescue group assembled under a highway overpass.

For many, the storm revived unpleasant memories of Hurricane Katrina.

Barry developed as a disturbance in the Gulf that stunned New Orleans during the Wednesday morning rush with a sudden deluge that flooded streets, homes and businesses.

At 8 p.m. Sunday, the Flood Protection Authority said field crews will reopening key floodgates in areas of the St. Bernard Parish and the Orleans Parish to assist with rail, emergency routes and river commerce. "I guess we are lucky".

Those rescued included a 77-year-old man who called for help because he had about 4ft (1.2m) of water in his home.

"It extended back in some places, five, six, seven blocks from the lake", he said, adding, "Water levels are the biggest threat in a weak storm like this".

Forecasters say rainfall estimates over south-central Louisiana now stand around 6 to 12 inches, with isolated maximum rainfall reaching as much as 20 inches, causing the potential for "dangerous, life-threatening flooding".
