The file transfer service used NFC to transfer files between devices, and although it was slow and rarely used, it still had its fans because of how widely available it was. We've reached out for more information on Fast Share and will update if we hear back. You'll be able to set visibility for your device so you can stay open to transfers or hidden from third parties.
One of the things that Android users have probably been wishing for years is to have a file-sharing service that's similar to Apple's AirDrop. Fast Share appears in the Share menu - using the same icon Nearby does - and then opens up a full-screen menu for sending. If you look at the device list in the second screenshot, this feature does not seem limited to Android phones, as an iPhone, Chromebook and smartwatch are listed as being nearby. What is noticeable at first is that it will let you "share to nearby devices without Internet".
One thing Apple users love about its ecosystem is AirDrop - the ability to share nearly anything to other Apple users seamlessly and easily. Sharing images and sometimes files to other apps and contacts within those apps are relatively easy on Android but doing the same between Android devices isn't. An iOS version would require a special app. There may be a need for such a feature, particularly on Android phones, that rivals others such as the AirDrop found on Apple devices. Google is known to rip services out of AOSP and put them into Google Play Services, so this move shouldn't come as a surprise. Nonetheless, Android users will be rejoiced to see this feature in the future, especially if it'll be able to share files and links to iOS devices too.
