No longer. Google has announced that Google Assistant is now available in its Waze navigation app. Google will be able to do numerous same things that it can do in Maps, including checking the traffic and changing your route.
It appears Google wants Google Maps to be the diner's app-of-choice, as it seems more and more features are coming to the service that revolve around going out to eat.
For now, it remains unclear if users of Google Maps in other countries are also getting the test "off-route" feature or not. Until that happens, you can enter your destination in the Google Maps app and question your cab driver every time the app reroutes you. Just say "Hey Google, report traffic" or "Hey Google, avoid tolls" when navigating with Waze and your Google Assistant will help keep you connected and informed, Google notes, while minimizing distractions.
You'll also be able to play music, message friends and make calls, all by issuing the proper command to the Assistant.
To enable this feature, when you get into the cab type in the destination and tap the Stay safer button at the bottom of the screen. As first spotted by XDA Developers, the feature appears to be live now in India and will alert you should your driver veer as much as 500 meters off route.
You'll be able to access Google Assistant in the Waze app by simply saying "Hey Google" or "OK Google".
