Wambach defends U.S. after 13-0 humiliation of Thailand

Madelen Janogy of Sweden celebrates

It is an intimidating assignment for the Thais, who are only appearing at their second World Cup.

"I'm very relieved, of course", said the Dutch coach, Sarina Wiegman, after her team dominated proceedings but were nearly forced to settle for a point. And once again at the head of the squad is Alex Morgan, one of the US team's captains and starting forward. The U.S. and Thailand have played just once before, in 2016, when the U.S. won 9-0. The long hair and All-American soccer girl that all these kids are going to look up to and I think she's going to have the same appeal to corporate America as Mia did.

Of course the US men's national team didn't even make the most recent World Cup, much less beat an opponent by double digits, so there's no real comparable to hold Tuesday's result up against.

Thailand, which ranked No. 34 in the world, was considered one of the weaker teams entering the tournament.

The 33-year-old Rapinoe has been a leading voice in the USWNT's much publicised fight for pay equality that saw them file a lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation in March accusing the organisation of gender discrimination. Morgan will be one of the players front and center as the USA seeks to bring home another World Cup win and maintain her status as one of the top forwards in the world. Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O'Hara, Ali Krieger and Alex Morgan are all playing their third World Cup.

Morgan says that sort of experience gives the team an edge.

Sweden got their campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 win over Chile.

The last team they will play is Sweden, which has proved itself to be a World Cup contender. She is also tied with Tiffany Milbrett for sixth on the U.S.'s all-time goal list.

Morgan said she had just spotted Nild in the hallway and introduced herself.

Of course as with most everything involving social media, there were strongly worded takes on the other side, with many questioning if a men's team would receive the same criticism.
