United Kingdom must pay bill even in ‘no deal’ Brexit, warns EU

Pound tumbles on Brexit agony as trade fight weighs on Wall Street

The former minister, who has been behind a series of failed cross-party moves to block a no-deal departure, said he could not think of any further parliamentary opportunity to intervene before Britain is due to leave on October 31.

(Although some of the Labour Leavers' preferences for a deal rely on the belief, shared by many Tory Brexiteers, that a backstop-free one is possible to negotiate.) Conservative opponents of no-deal and leadership candidates, Matt Hancock and Rory Stewart, revealed that they would vote against the motion.

Sajid Javid, the last of the 10 candidates to launch his campaign ahead of Thursday's first round of voting, dismissed Mr Johnson as "yesterday's news", saying the party needed to show it had changed. Business Secretary Greg Clark has warned it would be "political suicide" for the party, and given his backing to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, saying he "has a clear understanding of how important it is to have a deal and to pursue the trading relationship with the European Union that I believe is vital".
