President Trump disputed in an interview the account by former White House counsel Don McGahn to Robert Mueller that the president instructed him to remove the special counsel. He has already spent nearly 30 hours with Mueller's teams, where he testified under oath and is extensively quoted through the special counsel's report.

"I thought it was made clear", Trump said of his initial comments, made in an interview with ABC News, which caused an uproar.

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos asked Trump about McGahn's testimony in an interview this week.

Replied Trump: "Because he wanted to make himself look like a good lawyer. Robert Mueller had a total conflict of interest".

U.S. President Donald Trump enters the East Room to deliver remarks on second chance hiring, at the White House in Washington, U.S., June 13, 2019.

It wants to question McGahn after he figured prominently in Mueller's report about the Russian Federation probe and whether Trump committed obstruction of justice. McGahn described how Trump directed him to press the Justice Department for Mueller's firing by insisting that he raise what the president perceived as the special counsel's conflicts of interest.

Trump's assertion that he would be open to accepting a foreign power's help in his 2020 campaign ricocheted through Washington on Thursday, with Democrats condemning it as a call for further election interference and Republicans struggling to defend his comments.

"George, you're being a little wise guy, OK - which is, you know, typical for you", Trump fired back. "You couldn't have that happen with our country, and everybody understands that". Very simple. It's very simple. The big thing's collusion. "If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

However, President Trump vehemently denied doing this.
