Southwest joins American in extending 737 Max cancellations through Labor Day weekend

American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations to September

Boeing on June 11 reported it had booked no new aircraft orders in May and had recorded a net total, after deducting cancellations, of 15 in the first five months of this year after the removal of 82 737 MAX orders as a result of contractual changes. Technology created to prevent the aircraft from stalling has come under scrutiny, as it activated during both crashes due to false sensor readings and pushed the planes downward at too steep of an angle.

Ahead of the recertification of the Boeing 737 Max Aircraft grounded globally following the plane's involvement in two fatal crashes killing over 500 people, the Ethiopian Airlines says it will be the last to operate the aircraft when the ban is lifted.

When asked if he believed the 737 Max would resume flight before the end of the year, Muilenburg said, "I do, but again, I can't give you the specific timeline on it".

Executives and other staff will join American pilots on flights as soon as regulators certify that the Max is cleared for travel, and before September 4, which is the earliest date commercial trips will resume, American Chief Executive Officer Doug Parker said at the carrier's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday. The FAA has said that there is no time frame to approve the software solution proposed by the manufacturer for the aircraft.

Boeing reiterated Sunday it was working with global regulators to certify a software update for the jet, as well as related training and education material to safely return the plane to service.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

United Continental Holdings Inc. has removed the Max from its flight schedule through August 3, while Southwest, the biggest Max operator, has set August 5 for its return.

The company also faces the prospect of continued financial fallout from the 737 Max.
